Departments

Each semester, students change LEAP assignments and departments, giving them the opportunity to gain real world experience in different areas of leadership and ministry.

Pastoral

In the Pastoral Departments, students get an opportunity to work alongside Pastors. Students can be assigned to Pastoral Care, Hospitality, Discipleship, Online Ministry, Women’s Ministry, Young Adult Ministry, Youth Ministry, and Kids Ministry. Here they will develop professional people skills as well as the heart and vision behind the local church.

Creative

In the Creative Departments, students get the behind the scenes view of all things Production in the church and even within the college. Students can be assigned to Live Production, TV and Media Production, Marketing and Events, Worship and Creative Arts, and WLC Media and Marketing. Here students will be involved in planning and coordinating some of the churches large scale events like conferences, and develop their own talents and giftings within themselves.

Administrative

In the Administrative Departments, students get the opportunity to see the business side of the church and college. Students can be assigned to Church Management, Guest Relations, Senior Pastoral Publications, WLC Executive offices, and WLC Administration. Here students will learn the professional side of the church and college and experience the “whatever it takes” mentality to practically perform all God has for his church.

Outreach

In the Outreach Departments, students get the opportunity to see the administrative as well as the upkeep of Wave City Care’s outreach programs. Students can be assigned to Wave City Care’s programs and events (which includes youth mentoring programs in local schools and annual community outreach events and fundraisers) or Non-Profit Management. Here students will gain experience in the principle of a Non-Profit and learn the practice of reaching out to change the community for the Glory of God.

How LEAP Works

LEAP is designed to offer students practical, hands-on experience in a variety of ministry roles and settings so they can discover and refine their particular gifting. Students learn and serve under the guidance of experienced ministry leaders in a positive learning environment, where they receive direction, correction, and evaluation to help them improve and develop as emerging leaders. The departmental service portion of the course provides firsthand introduction to the physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental capacity necessary for exemplary leadership; the classroom experience bridges the gap between students’ academic learning and the “real world” application of concepts for both ministry and vocational settings.

For students whose home church is in Hampton Roads, LEAP credits are earned through service in their home church or charity. Many WLC graduates have discovered a fuller dimension of God’s call through their LEAP experiences and some have even found their full-time ministry vocation through their LEAP assignments.

Jim Knarr

Passionate about people is the best way to describe LEAP Director, Jim Knarr. With a drive to lead and strong belief that the best leaders understand and demonstrate how to serve others, Professor Knarr has a high drive to understand and practice healthy relationships.

Personal Life Missions Statement: To learn the greatest complexities of God in order to teach and relate God to others in the simplest and most effective way.
